Former Kelly Walsh Trainer, Chellsie Johnson, recently stepped down from her position as the “go-to” gal for all of the athletes at KW. She had such a large impact on student-athletes as a trainer. Although her role in athletics isn’t as large, she still teaches a Sports Medicine class that is highly spoken of.
Junior, Brax Thomas said, “Chellsie has real life experiences on and off the field that allow for her to influence the class with knowledge.”
The class includes shadowing and learning about the work of healthcare professions and medical teams. It incorporates legal considerations in healthcare, and emergency treatment and planning. The class is introduced to taping, wrapping, and therapeutic technique.
The Sports Medicine II class, along with Sports Physiology, are provided after this course. “While it can be difficult, people interested in pursuing this career would definitely appreciate the class,” said Thomas.
This year, however, Kelly Walsh welcomed a new trainer named Sydnee Jensen. While she has quite large shoes to fill, she has not fallen to the challenge. Student-Trainers had nothing but good to say about her.
Senior, Rylee Hawford has worked closely with Jensen since this summer, “Sydnee has been a great athletic trainer! She promotes a positive environment to all the athletes and makes sure they are heard when they’re hurting. Sydnee works very hard. Working with her has helped me find what exactly I want to do with my career moving forward after graduation!” said Hofford.
Jensen has influenced the sports world at Kelly Walsh very well. Her presence at all sports activities is well noticed. Jensen has been here for all the fall sports, including, Boys & Girls Cross Country, Boys Football, Boys & Girls Golf, Girls Swimming, and Girls Volleyball. Winter sports are right around the corner, the trainers must prepare for the help that will soon be needed.
Junior, Emerson Levin participated in Volleyball this fall and is going to be a part of the student trainers for the winter season. “I’m excited to be back in the training room, and even though Chellsie is irreplaceable, I am excited to start getting to know Sydnee and learn from her,” said Levin.
Many other student trainers will be joining Levin for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year. Being a trainer can be a very difficult job that requires a lot of extra time and hard work. Kelly Walsh appreciates the energy that every trainer puts in. Being quite the athletic-focused school, they love the extra hands. Yes, a new trainer can be quite the adjustment, but Jensen is more than capable to tackle the job.
