The Oil Bowl for football, the Miller Cup for wrestling, the Peach Basket for basketball, and even the Tin Cup for golf. These are the names for the trophies awarded to whoever wins that sport between the cross town rivals Natrona County High School and Kelly Walsh High School. There are others including volleyball, swimming and tennis, however likely the most important trophy of the spring season is the Casper Cup. The Casper Cup is awarded to the high school in Casper who wins in soccer.
The girls team at Kelly Walsh has been dominant the last several years over NC, as well as the rest of the state, winning back to back state championships in 2023 and 2024. The boys team, while still being dominant over NC has had struggles in the state tournament for several years now. Placing fourth the last three years at state, the boys have always had a contending team.
The state tournament will be held in Gillette this year, and both teams are looking to bring some hardware. The win this past Tuesday made it nine years in a row that the boys team has beaten Natrona in soccer.
“When we beat NC it’s always a good accomplishment. Beating them as our rivals is an amazing feeling. I have never lost to them in soccer,” said senior Beau Barclay. Beau has started varsity for Kelly Walsh since his freshman year and has had a big impact on the teams overall success, especially against NC.
Brayden Walden, another senior who has helped the team on the defensive side of the ball also looked forward to beating NC for the fourth time during his time at Kelly Walsh.
“It means a lot to beat NC, especially because they are our biggest rival. It’s always a great feeling to beat them in both games every year,” said Walden.
The two teams play twice every year, the first meeting ended in an 11-0 win for the Trojans. As good as the game was in almost every aspect, the first game is unimportant and does not win them the trophy. But on Tuesday, the Trojans secured their 9th straight Casper Cup win over the Mustangs.
