With the bitter sweet announcement of our beloved band teacher Mr. Rose’s resignation, the Kelly Walsh Band faces an emotional farewell that marks the end of an era. As the director of countless memories and musical milestones, Rose’s departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of students and faculty alike.
Announcing first to students, then to the world via social media Rose wrote “This will be my last year teaching band at Kelly Walsh High School…Directing the band program at KW has been the privilege of a lifetime.”
Unlike a regular retirement, this one has already hit harder. Not only is band a year long class, but marching band becomes an after school priority from the end of summer till November for all members involved. Throughout the marching band season members rehearse 630 hours a week. Just like a sports team, this immense amount of time spent with one teacher/coach and fellow teammates creates a special bond that is hard to compare,
“I am sad that we will be losing such an influential member and inspiring director but I am glad to have gotten to know Mr. Rose” said sophomore clarinet player Audrey Milmont.
Ever since Mr.Rose took over this job in 2015 the band program has seen nothing but growth and success. After receiving 9 straight superior rankings and being the first Wyoming school to win the UW marching band competition and sweep every single caption in the state for three years in a row, it is easy to say that Mr.Rose has made a lasting impression on this program.
With the sudden and shocking news, a high majority of band members were overwhelmed with worry, of course. But after finding out assistant band director, Mrs. Sarah Hanson is taking over the job as the head band director, the feeling of anxiety started to subside.
Though it’s big shoes to fill, students know Hanson is more than ready to take over.
“It’s change, it’s different. I’m excited to see the work she can do with us and how she can lead us into the future with the band,” said sophomore trombone player Ty Brumfeild.
Brumfield isn’t alone in this feeling. “Though I’m very sad to see Mr.Rose go, I know Mrs.Hanson is more than capable to keep our band as successful as we have been. Though this change is scary, without change never comes growth,” said sophomore oboe player and leadership team member Layne Parks.
As we bid farewell to our much loved band teacher Mr.Rose, the Kelly Walsh Band faces a poignant moment that signifies the end of an era. While we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind, it’s also time to embrace the bittersweet emotions that come with this transition, cherishing the impact he has made on all of us. As the band world would say, “change is everything.”
