As the Outdoor Track season progresses, all athletes attempt to improve and PR in their events. However, certain positions remain reserved for the best of the best. On May 2, Kelly Walsh hosts yet another track meet, but it isn’t just like any other. It is the Wyoming Track Classic, a meet reserved for the best in the state; only 12 athletes in field events and 8 in running events, men and women. Even more impressive, it’s invite only.
While the small meet may seem like a mere elite event, it actually holds and predicts significant data and outcomes for State Track. It serves as a prognostication for how the podium will look at the finale of the season.
“The track classic creates an environment of so much competition, that oftentimes the only other place you will see it is at state. Being able to participate in that arguably prepares you for state better than any other meet,” said Landon Walker, Kelly Walsh’s primary jumper on the men’s team.
In addition, many of the athletes use it to contribute to their strategy and people to beat during their mental preparation. And mental preparation is key for athletes who have talent in multiple events like Allie Scribner.
“This meet will help me mentally for state a ton because I will have more confidence about my races at state,” she said.
Nevertheless, the Track Classic is just another meet, where fun and memories are part of the event.
“My first time competing at the Wyoming Track Classic was such a blast!” said Lexi Longhurst, “I had lots of fun competing with the best in the state and making connections with these amazing girls!”
Having so much positive energy also contributes to great results.According to an article on Penn LPS, “Happiness positively impacts performance by boosting motivation, enhancing focus, and improving cognitive function. Happy individuals are more likely to be engaged, creative, and productive at work and in other areas of life.” One of those areas of life just happens to be these runners.
Overall, Kelly Walsh is more than honored to be the host of such a prestigious athletic event. Dedicated to making it the best it can be, the school works hard to provide a safe, fun, and reliable environment, allowing athletes to perform at the best of their ability. Especially due to the fact that in under a month, they’ll be hosting Wyoming State Track as well.
