The definition of senioritis is “a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance.”
Seniors at Kelly Walsh are no stranger to the idea of senioritis whether it’s real or not. As the last few months of class approach students begin to prepare for their fight against senioritis before time runs out.
There are proven statistics that show there is a decline in productivity and application from students. According to a study done by Omniscient, 78 percent of students experience senioritis during their second semester of senior year.
“I think that senior slump is a real thing, I think it affects students because us seniors have less classes and have chances to go home during the day which just makes it harder and more of a hassle to go back to school,” said Brayden Walden.
Seniors having the opportunity to have an open schedule makes it very easy to fall out of the academic groove. This makes it very easy for them to get in the habit of falling behind and missing class.
With graduation being so close after spring break ends, students struggle to get back engaged with the school environment which leads to chronic absenteeism, and a decrease in good grades.
¨Most seniors just wanna get to the end of the year as quickly as they can, and Spring Break gives them the idea of what it’s gonna be like when the school year is over. So, after they get back, it’s hard to stay motivated to go to school since we got that taste of school finally being over,¨ said Braden Shelton
This isn’t just an issue within high school, colleges also experience students getting into a senior slump when it comes to the end of the year. The Baldwin Wallace University gives information on the common symptoms that occur during the time of the senior slump. Oversleeping, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, and high interest in having fun and socializing are all signs of common senioritis.
Whether or not it’s a myth, senioritis is a cycle that students are best to stay away from so their academic careers aren’t harmed. Seniors have a big task finishing strong for their final year of high school so keeping locked in and focused is very important for these last few months of the school year.
