Every year, Kelly Walsh’s National Honor Society holds a sock drive to spread holiday cheer. National Honor Society comes together to collect socks from students to donate them to local retirement homes.
The Honor Society asks for holiday socks for the spirited season; for both men and women. There is a planning, collecting, and driving committee. This is an annual service chapter project for the NHS that most of the members participate in.
This year’s locations that are receiving socks are Meadows Wind, Primrose, Edgewood Park Place, and Garden Square.
How does the sock drive work and what exactly is it?
“We put boxes around the school and encourage students to donate new socks. We then collect them, and take them to nursing homes and other places in need,” said junior Ava Titus, first year member.
Members of NHS have many opportunities to volunteer in this project. There are all three committees and members are expected to join in on decorating and packing the gift bags and cards before delivering the socks.
“I was leading the collection committee. I think the sock drive is a good activity that we do. We encourage our school to get in the holiday spirit by donating to their community. Our nursing home/residents are also so appreciative and their smiles of joy make the hard work worth it,” said NHS President, Emerson Levin, senior.
This project not only encourages donations but it encourages relationships and bonds.
“With the donations from everyone around school, all people are involved in this project. The creation of the bags and the formation of communities creates stronger bonds and relationships through our society. The connection to the nursing homes by actually visiting them gives society a great look,” said junior Madi Cochran
Most members of NHS came together the first week of December to collect the socks donated and to make hand-made cards to accompany those socks. NHS collected close to four hundred pairs of socks this year.
Advisors Rebecca Strand and Laura Martinovich supervised the meeting and supplied markers and paper to make the activity possible. They also provided the National Honor Society Members with pizza for dinner.
This project is easy going and is accessible for most members to participate in. National Honor Society continued this chapter service project to provide holiday cheer to residents of local nursing homes and to connect the school with the community.
