Kelly Walsh has had a surprising start to the new season with new head coach Randy Roden.
So far Kelly Walsh is 3-3 taking down Thunder Basin, Laramie, and Cheyenne South and losing to Campbell County, Sheridan and Cheyenne East. KW has seen a new impressive offensive and defensive strategy from the Trojan football team that has led them to their 3 wins.
According to Wyoming-football.com KW hasn’t had a winning season since 2017. And the 2024 team is looking to end that streak this season.
Landon Walker is a senior and major leader for the team. He has played football all the way through high school and he he’s enjoyed a success full season so far but believes self confidence is the key to success.
“I see a big difference in the physical aspect of the game, and with our offense we always have to be the more physical team if we want to win. The difference between the games we win and lose isn’t because the other team is just better than us, it is because some people have a mentality that is easily broken. It affects the physical part of the game so much. If we truly believe in ourselves and keep working hard there will be more wins to come,” Walker said.
Another senior leader, Ethan Hague believes the new coaching staff has brought a different type of mentality to practices and games.
“It’s been a big mentality change at practice, guys are coming into practice working for something. The new coaches and the things they brought with them like the offense and defense help, but I think a lot of the guys just got tired of being pushed over. When you come to practice with an attitude and some intent good things will come out of it,” Hague said.
Junior quarterback Carter Alvar, agrees with Hague about having a different mentality, but he also believes the team just needs to keep pressing forward and not think about the past.
“I feel like the reason we have a winning record at this point is that we push each other in practice to make us more prepared for our games. We have great leaders on the team that give us positive energy, and help us keep our heads up when things don’t go the way we want them to. We have been focusing on pushing forward and not thinking about the past. I think we have a great coaching staff and they are using us all in the best ways possible to make us better as a team. We are focused on giving our best effort together as a team. We’re in it together. And that’s why I think we’ve gotten some great Ws this season,” Alvar said.
The Trojans will be facing their rival Natrona County this Friday in the annual Oil Bowl. Both teams are coming in with a 3-3 record with the hopes of getting a 4th win on the season. The overall series record heavily favors the Mustangs, but who knows, maybe this is KW’s year to get a win over their nemesis from across town.
